Golden Retriever Handbook · Updated July 13, 2026

Here's the test nobody tells you about: whatever you name this puppy, you will one day shout it across a crowded dog park while holding a bag of poop. Choose accordingly. The best golden retriever names are one or two syllables, end on a bright vowel or crisp consonant, sound nothing like "no" or "sit," and still feel right on a gray-muzzled twelve-year-old.

Below are more than 500 names organized by theme — start with the crowd favorites, then dig into the color, food, pop-culture, and old-soul sections until one makes you grin. That's usually the one. If your puppy hasn't come home yet, bookmark our week-one playbook too; you'll want the name settled before pickup day.

How to test a name in 3 days: Day one, say the shortlisted name out loud twenty times — inside voice and dog-park volume — and drop any that feel silly or mumble into two sounds. Day two, use the front-runner for everything: meals, potty trips, play. A good name feels natural by dinner. Day three, check for confusion — does the puppy perk up at the name, or does it collide with a cue word or a family member's name? If it passes all three days, it's the name. Puppies genuinely don't care if you change your mind in week one; they re-learn a name in a day or two of treats.

Picking the Winner

The AKC's guide to naming a puppy boils good naming down to sound mechanics: short names with hard consonants and long vowels are easiest for dogs to distinguish. Beyond that, pick something you'll love saying ten thousand times, because you will. And once it's chosen, start using it immediately and generously — name recognition is the first item in our first-year training guide, and it's the foundation every other cue is built on.
